Men’s 5th Team – Captains Season Review

While the 5s have had a mixed bag of results this year, I would still consider it a good season going forward. We had a strong influx of new players, whom have all contributed significantly to the team and overall experience of this season. While the league table may not fully reflect it, the season of 2019/20 has been a productive one nonetheless.

Taking seven points this season was a frustrating tally; many games couldn’t be split so easily. Nevertheless some games went particularly well, namely a 5-1 win at home against Abertay 3s. Our cup run was an indicator of a strong season, reaching a cup quarter final only to narrowly lose on penalties.

The one constant throughout our season has been our coach, Darren Hunter, who has worked tirelessly to create enjoyable sessions that have successfully helped to develop everyone in our squad. As a leaver, I wish Darren – and everyone else involved in the club – the absolute best for future seasons.

On the note of leavers, all of those moving on from University in the 5s have undoubtedly given their all throughout the season. Calum, Colm, Robin, Sami, Liam, Joe, and myself are leaving the club this year, and it is fair to say the club will have a long lasting impact on all of us. To those returning, and whomever should fill my shoes next year, I would like to say that being captain of the 5s – even despite some recurring injuries – has been an immensely rewarding experience, and I look forward to hopefully returning for Football Ball in future years once everything has calmed down.
